Here are the most significant differences between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12

Here's what Apple just announced about iPhone 13 in comparison to iPhone 12

A first official look at Apple's iPhone 13 and the new smartphones sounds exhilarating - at least on paper. We'll see bigger sensors, bigger batteries, and fast-refreshing displays that adjust based on your actions on screen, in addition to a new A15 Bionic processor. That's pretty impressive.

At first glance, the iPhone 13 appears to be a significant upgrade over its iPhone 12 counterpart. These devices, released just last year, remain among the best phones available.

  •  Is it time to upgrade to the iPhone 13?
  •  Let's look at it from an iPhone perspective. Should you upgrade to the iPhone 13 from the iPhone 11?
  • Plus: iPhone 13 battery capacities are revealed

To reach a definitive conclusion, we must test all four new iPhone 13 models. Our initial iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12 comparison shows Apple is stepping up its game in several areas. Take a look at the specs for the new iPhones and where the iPhone 13 improves on the iPhone 12.

Prices and release dates of iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12

Apple's starting price for its phones hasn't changed as the iPhone 12 makes way for the iPhone 13. The iPhone 13 models will have the same prices as their iPhone 12 counterparts: $699 for the iPhone 13 mini, $799 for the iPhone 13, $999 for the iPhone 13 Pro, and $1,099 for the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

With the iPhone 13 and 13 mini, you're getting more storage for your money than with the comparable iPhone 12 models. Compared with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, the two iPhone 13 models now have 128GB of storage rather than 64GB. A new 1TB option is available for the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Apple appears to be keeping the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini in its lineup, although at reduced prices. Apple will charge $699 for the iPhone 12 and $599 for the iPhone 12 mini.

Preorders for the iPhone 13 models will begin on Friday (Sept. 17). On Sept. 24, the phones will be available in stores.

Design and display of iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12

Aside from one visible exception, the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 12 are very similar from a design standpoint. All four new iPhone models have a smaller notch, which is present on iPhone 13. The look of the phones is the same, with the same flat edges and Ceramic Shield displays for more excellent durability.

Although the new models weigh a bit more - probably due to the bigger batteries, Apple has included with the iPhone 13 - new color options. Pink joins black (Midnight), white (Starlight), blue, and Product [RED] color options on the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini. With Sierra Blue joining graphite, gold, and silver, Apple's iPhone 13 Pro lineup has four colors.

The iPhone 13 lineup features the same AMOLED display as iPhone 12, but Apple has made substantial changes to the screens. Instead, Apple promises brighter displays - 28% more colorful than the iPhone 12. While the iPhone 13 and 13 mini produce 800 nits of brightness, the iPhone 13 Pro offers 1,000 intelligence.

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are the first Apple phones with ProMotion displays. They can dynamically adjust their refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz based on your onscreen activity. The iPhone 12 Pro was stuck at 60Hz, the same as the iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 12, and 12 mini.

Comparing the iPhone 13 and 12 in terms of cameras

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 have significantly different cameras, even though the number of lenses remained the same. The iPhone 13's camera experience should be completely different from what Apple has done with the camera hardware.

The iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini come with a 12MP main camera, the biggest sensor ever found in a dual-camera iPhone. Obtaining sharper pictures should be more accessible, with 47% more light coming in. In addition to sensor shift optical image stabilization, the ultrawide lens promises to improve detail in darker areas of your photos. Apple added a sensor-shift to the iPhone 12 Pro Max last year.

Compared to the iPhone 13 models, the iPhone 13 Pro has even greater camera improvements. Moreover, the wider aperture of the ultrawide angle lens on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max allows for improved low-light shots. That will result in brighter, sharper images even when it is dark out. (It was f/2.4 on the iPhone 12 Pro models.) With the iPhone 13 Pro, the 77mm telephoto lens now offers a 3x optical zoom, an improvement over the iPhone 12 Pro for which there was a 2.5x zoom.

This model offers sensor-shift stabilization rather than being limited to the Pro Max model, which does not have it. All these changes will eventually translate to better photos, which we are eager to see.

The iPhone 13 vs. the iPhone 12:

Performance and 5G Apple's iPhone 13 models are powered by the A15 Bionic processor, replacing the A14 Bionic chip found in all iPhone 12 models. We'll need to benchmark the phones to determine how fast the A14 is, but knowing that it's the fastest one we've tested should lead to fast performance. Apple's iPhone 13 Pro models have a 5-core graphics processor, compared to the iPhone 13's 4-core graphics processor. As a result, the Pro models are likely to be gaming powerhouses, especially with last year's iPhone.

Despite its best-in-class 5G compatibility, the iPhone 12 should support more 5G bands. Apple said 5G support will double from 200 to 60 carriers in 60 countries and regions by the end of the year. iOS 15 will be pre-installed on the iPhone 13.

Apple's iPhone 12 models are currently running iOS 14, but they will be able to upgrade to iOS 15 when that software update is released on September 20. (And if you have downloaded the iOS 15 beta, you've already got iOS 15 on your iPhone 12).

Battery life and charging of iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12

The iPhone 13's battery is not revealed when Apple announces new phones, so we have no idea how big it is compared to the iPhone 12. We do know that they are larger, and that should translate to longer battery life.

That's welcome news. Except for the iPhone 12 Pro Max, all other iPhone 12 models performed poorly in our battery test in which we had the phones surf the web over cellular until they ran out of power.

According to Apple, the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 Pro should last up to 1.5 hours longer than their iPhone 12 counterparts. Apple is expected to improve the battery life of the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro Max by 2.5 hours. Our best phone battery life list would include the iPhone 13 Pro Max if that's the case.

Charge speeds are unchanged from the iPhone 12 - 15W MagSafe wireless charging and 20W wired charging. Apple will not include a charger with the iPhone 13 models, as it did with the iPhone 12.

Comparison of iPhone 13 and iPhone 12:

Outlook In general, we expect phones to improve from generation to generation, but the differences in our iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12 comparison are quite striking. The improved storage options, faster processor, and better camera would make this a significant upgrade. The iPhone 13 Pro's fast-refreshing displays and enhanced battery life make this a substantial upgrade over last year.
